What is Nia?

Nia invites you to revitalize, restore, and invigorate your senses through Music, Movement, and Self-Expression. Nia is the dance of body, mind, and spirit. It’s the perfect blend of form and freedom.

Nia is a movement technique that was developed by Debie and Carlos Rosas. It is based on the Body’s way, which means using the body according to its design. Nia is an acronym for Neuro-muscular Integrative Action, which means using physical activity to integrate one’s nuerology with one’s body (musculature). Or more simply stated - being conscious of our movements.

Nia draws inspiration from the Dance Arts (Modern Dance, Jazz, and Duncan Dance), the Martial Arts (Tai Chi, Aikido, Tae Kwan Do), and the Healing Arts (Yoga, Feldenkrais and the Alexander Technique); which blends fun, precision, and mindfulness to connect the body, mind, emotion, and spirit.

Being a sensory based technique, Nia invites us to listen to the voice of the body; and more importantly to listen to the voice of your body. Nia subscribes to the thought that by sensing and listening, we are able to make choices to align with comfort, joy, and pleasure. With practice, we learn to connect to physical sensation in daily life and recognize our needs, which is an approach to self-healing. This is referred to as dancing through life.
